How to find and merge duplicate contacts

Martin writes: Since converting from Microsoft to Apple, all my contacts have been duplicated—sometimes up to five times!
Some information is coming from Outlook Contacts but I can’t find the source and iCloud seems to be procreating without any help.
Please help me to eradicate these multiple contacts and regain my sanity.
Hi Martin! Sounds like there was a little confusion while your address book was making its way from your Windows PC to your Mac—and yes, it’s pretty annoying to get five results for a contact search when you were looking for just one.
Luckily, there’s a fairly easy way to seek out and merge duplicate entries in the Mac’s Contacts app.

The Mac’s “Contacts” app can find and merge duplicate contacts automatically—but make sure to back up your contacts before starting the process.

Here’s how…

• First, make sure to back up your address book before you start merging or deleting any contacts. Open the Contacts app, click File, Export, then Contacts Archive. Pick a place on your Mac’s hard drive that’s easy to remember (like the Documents directory), then click the Save button.
• Next, click the Card menu at the top of the screen, then select “Look for Duplicates.”
• After scouring your address book for a few seconds, the Contacts app will report back with its results. For instance, when I recently checked for duplicate contacts, I got a message that read: “17 duplicate cards and 10 duplicated entries were found.”
• Now, time for the moment of truth. Click the Merge button to let your Mac merge any duplicate contacts it found. Unfortunately, you can’t review the changes before they’re made—and that’s why it’s so important to make a backup before the merge.
• Once the “deduping” process is completed, give your contacts a look. See anything you don’t like? If so, you can restore the backup you made by clicking File, Import, and then selecting the Contacts archive you saved earlier.
• If, on the other hand, everything looks good, then you’re all set—and remember, if you’re an iCloud user (and it sounds like you are, Martin), all your merged contacts should sync automatically with any iCloud-connected iPhones and iPads.

Inspiring Students to Think About College

One of our goals at New Milford High School is to present as many college options as possible to our students if that is the direction they want to pursue. When hiring some new guidance counselors a little over two years ago I asked them during the interview process how they would increase access to higher education options upon graduation. One idea that was developed by Michelle Harle, who is now in her third year at NMHS, was to organize and hold a college fair during the school day for all students to attend if they choose. not only did Michelle present the idea, but she was able to elicit the support of the Guidance Department.  Working together they have been able to implement and sustain an opportunity for all of your students in grades 9-12.

The best part about this college fair is that students do not miss any class time to attend, as we hold it during all three of our lunch periods.  Since lunch is 48 minutes, students can decide how quickly they want to eat and how much time they want to spend at the event.  In terms of the school day the college fair runs from 10:30 AM until 1:15 PM.  No student is forced to attend, but I can tell you that the main gym is jam packed with students eager to learn more about their options after high school.  I just got back to my office and was proud to see the gym packed with students engaged in conversations with college reps and each other about future learning.  On a personal note I was excited to see both my alma maters, Salisbury University (B.S.) and East Stroudsburg University (M.Ed.), in attendance.

The event was a huge success.  There were well over 100 colleges in attendance and the atmosphere was electric.  You can view the entire program that was distributed to our students HERE (I had to add a separate link for the front and back covers).  This was developed by my Guidance Department and includes information on all of the colleges that attended, as well as, a college fair cheat sheet.  Click HERE to view a Instagram video of the event. The following are some things my Guidance Department had to do, as well as, some pointers, if you want to organize a similar event:

• Begin outreach to schools months before.  Michelle began doing this last May.  The key is to provide as many options for students.
• Make sure you have enough tables for the reps.  We rent these and have them delivered the day before.
• Organize a schedule where students do not miss any of their classes.
• Reserve parking for the reps and communicate this to your students early on.
• Provide food for the reps in the area where the fair will be held.  My counselors arrange for pizza, salads, and cookies.
• Let your parents and other stakeholders know about the college fair in advance.  We email out a list of attending colleges, as well as, invite them to attend the event.
• Create a program for your students that provides pertinent information on each school (location, website, majors).
• Encourage your staff to wear apparel from their alma mater the day of the event to build excitement and pride in the event.
• Have students on hand to help direct the reps where to go.

Having a forward-thinking guidance department at NMHS is providing our students with the right guidance to make informed decisions about their future.

How to Update Galaxy S4 I9500 with Android 4 3 XXUEMJ8 Jelly Bean Official Firmware

6. The Android 4.3 XXUEMJ8 Jelly Bean firmware is compatible only with Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500. Applying this to any incorrect variant might brick the device. Verify the model number of the Galaxy S4 by navigating to Settings >> About Phone.

Step 1: Extract Firmware zip file using winrar/7zip/winzip or any other extracting tool, you will get a .tar.md5 file and some other files.
Step 2: Extract Odin zip file and you will get Odin3 v3.07.exe along with few other files.
Step 3: Switch off the Galaxy S4.
Step 4: Boot the device into Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down, Home and Power buttons together until a construction Android robot icon with a warning triangle appears on screen. Now press the Volume Up button to enter Download Mode.
Step 5: Run Odin on the computer as an Administrator.
Step 6: Connect the Galaxy S4 to the computer using USB cable while it is in the Download Mode. Wait until Odin detects the device. When the device is connected successfully, the ID: COM box will turn to light blue with the COM port number. Additionally, the successful connected will be indicated by a message saying Added.

Note: If the Added message does not appear, then try re-install USB drivers or changing the port on the computer.

Step 7: Select the following files in Odin from extracted I9500XXUEMJ8 firmware folder:

• Click the PDA button and select the .tar.md5 file.
• Click the Phone button and select file with MODEM in its name. Ignore if there is no such file.
• Click the CSC button and select file with CSC in its name. Ignore if there is no such file.
• Click the PIT button and select the .pit file. Ignore if there is no such file.

Step 8: In Odin, enable Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checkboxes. Also, ensure the Re-Partition checkbox is chosen only if a .pit file was chosen in the previous step.
Step 9: Verify everything suggested in Step 7 and Step 8 is done correctly. Then hit the Start button to begin the installation process.
Step 10: Once the installation process is completed, your phone will restart and soon you will see a PASS message with green background in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. You can now unplug the USB cable to disconnect your device from the computer.

Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 should be now updated with official Android 4.3 XXUEMJ8 Jelly Bean. Head over to Settings >> About Phone to verify the software version running on the device.

Note: If Galaxy S4 I9500 stuck at booting animation after Step 10 then go to recovery mode (press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together) and perform Wipe data/Factory Reset and Wipe Cache Partition task before selecting reboot system now function. In recovery mode use Volume keys to navigate between options and Power key to select the option. Please note, performing wiping task will erase your device internal memory data and not external SD card data.

As a direct-to-client investment service, our website plays an absolutely critical role in attracting and retaining customers. While we’ve won a number of awards for the quality of our customer service and online trading platform, we realized our sites search functionality was in need of an upgrade.
Clients use our site to search for and view information on funds and stocks to help them weigh their investment decisions. However, Google Analytics showed that between 35-45% of client searches on the site resulted in no matches at all, while 15% of searches came back with thousands of potential results, meaning the right ones were often buried. Search was one of the last tasks clients performed before leaving the site altogether, showing the frustrations they experience in being unable to find what they were looking for.

To tackle these problems in-house would have proved costly and time-consuming, so we looked at a number of hosted providers. When our Google partner Extended Content Solutions Limited demoed the Google Search Appliance (GSA) using our own data, we saw instantly how it would benefit us.

Features like Intelligent Re-Direct enable customers searching, for example, for a subsidiary company to be re-directed immediately to the name of its parent company, which is what you’d actually trade shares in. The Spell Suggestions feature makes searching much faster. The GSA’s Query Expansion feature also provides clients with additional relevant results when they search for certain products or funds, meaning that they are presented with more investment options. Best of all, the GSA was so easy to integrate with our existing systems that we were up and running within a month.

Since deploying the GSA, feedback from our customers has been fantastic. Now, only 5% of searches result in zero matches or an unmanageable number of results, compared with 65% beforehand. We have a 99% click through rate, showing us that users are finding the fund or stock they’re looking for on their first search, whereas previously only 20% of searches actually generated a click-through to view that share or fund. Calls to our contact centre relating to finding information on stocks and funds on the site almost disappeared overnight. The next step for us is adding the ability for customers to search for our videos, which give up-to-date and insightful information on market trends. It’s exciting to think though that we’ve probably only scratched the surface of all the potential the GSA has to offer and how we can use it.

In the months since we’ve deployed the GSA we’ve improved customer retention and acquisition and increased the conversion rates of website traffic to client registrations. As the site goes from strength-to-strength it has paid for itself a number of times over. It is no exaggeration to say that the GSA has completely transformed the role the website plays within our business.

How to fix a phone that wont charge properly 2014

Some of you may have suffered from this problem and rushed out to buy a new charger when the solution was at hand with only a tiny bit of effort and only a little bit more know how. This has beenone of our longest running forum topics, appearing over a year ago in answer to the problem that the Galaxy Nexus wouldnt charge. One of our industrious readers, Marchino, shared the first fix and has had pages of thanks dedicated to him ever since. Heres five tips to fix a phone that wont charge.

Most charging problems are related to your USB cable or charger, or even the port itself. / 

The problem

Either your phone wont charge at all when it is plugged in, or the connection drops out or only charges very slowly, sometimes only just faster than your devices battery is discharging. This is actually a very common complaint, and one I suffered from with a device myself. Theres a few things that couldve gone wrong.

DIY USB port fix

The quickest and easiest, and often most successful, solution is simply to do a little DIY repair on your actual hardware. The problem is quite often that the metallic surface inside the USB port and the microUSB charger are not making good contact, either through a manufacturing defect or because of the continual plugging and unplugging of the charging cable. All you need to do is shut down your device, remove the battery if possible and use something small, like a toothpick, to lever up the little tab inside the USB port on your smartphone or tablet. Do so very carefully and gently, then reinsert your battery and plug it in again. Nine times out of ten this is all that is required.

Switch cables

The flimsiest part of a charger is of course the cable, not the adapter that plugs into the wall socket. So if your device is having charging issues and the previous solution hasnt helped, you might have a faulty cable. Before you rush out to buy a replacement, just grab a spare USB cable from another device and try it instead. Quite often the cable will fray inside because it is constantly being curled up, stood on or whatever. Rather than buy a complete new charger you may only need a new cable. Likewise, if the cable doesnt seem to be the problem, check the wall plug adapter, that may be the issue instead. Also, check the same charger/cable combination on a different device and see if it works normally. iPhone users have their work cut out for them with the incredibly flimsy Lightning Port charger.

Clean up your act

Sometimes the reason a device is not charging correctly is because there is something lodged in the port, or there is just a lot of debris blocking the connection. Pocket lint, dirt and other minute rubbish can get into all sorts of nooks and crannies on a smartphone, so take a look to make sure there isnt something lodged inside the microUSB port (or in the charging cable either). Of course, also make sure to never charge your phone near water or in excessively hot or humid conditions. Also, do not overcharge your device, charging overnight when your battery only needs 2-3 hours is a very bad idea and can lead to a battery exploding or damaging your phone.

Replace the battery

If your device is old, or seems to be acting very strangely where the battery is concerned, you might have a defective battery. If your Android has a removable case, take the battery cover off and ensure the battery isnt bulging or otherwise deformed or leaking. If it is, remove it immediately and clean the area carefully to avoid corrosion. If your cover is non-removable, you can lay the phone on the table and try spinning it, if the battery is bulging it will spin (this could just be the design of the phone though too, so dont be alarmed). Replace the battery with a manufacturer original or respected third party power source. A new battery should last at lest two years before it needs to be replaced, although this depends on the number of charge and discharge cycles. If this seems necessary too soon, check your warranty, you may be eligible for a free replacement.

Manufacturer batteries or reliable third-party batteries are a safe bet. / 

Up against the wall

Charging from a wall socket is always going to charge faster than via PC or laptop. Likewise, the current is different, with a wall socket putting out potentially double the power of a laptop or computer. Of course, if youre using a different charger cable and adapter than the one the phone came with, it might also be the case that your charger is not sufficiently powerful for your device. For example, if youre using a charger that came with a Bluetooth headset it may simply not have the guts to be able to charge your phone. There might also be a problem with your wall socket, but that is much less likely. To charge faster, switch on airplane mode or turn your phone off.

If all else fails, just double check that you actually have the power point switched on. That is the first thing they will ask you if you call your manufacturer for help, which might need to be your next step if none of these solutions have worked for you.

IPL likely to increase player retention reduce salary cap introducing Joker Card

IPL franchises are likely to have two options available to keep the core of their teams intact ahead of the 2014 season: the usual practice of player retention, and a new system of right to match cards that can be used during the auction. A team is expected to be able to retain up to five players and the IPL has recommended three right to match cards per franchise, which means up to eight players could be retained, salary cap permitting. The auction is likely to be held on February 12 and 13 at a yet-to-be-decided venue.

The franchises were also informed that the 2014 general elections in India will have an impact on the venue for the tournament. Once the Indian government announced the election dates, the IPL will work out a feasible venue for next years edition, the franchises were told.

The idea of the right to match card was discussed during a two-day IPL workshop in Singapore on November 28 and 29 that was organised by the BCCI. A card would allow a franchise to buy back a player during the auction by simply matching the highest bid. For example, if two or more franchises were bidding for a player who had represented a different team in the 2013 season, then that teams owners could buy back the player if they wanted to by matching the highest bid for him.

During the discussions in Singapore, one suggestion was to bring all the players back into the auction but the IPL was not interested in abandoning the retention policy. Although officials did not specify the reasons, the feeling was that a retention policy allowed certain powerful franchises to hold on to the players that formed the core of their side over the previous seasons.

It is understood that the idea of a right to match card was floated to offset the retention rule, which some franchises felt was detrimental to their chances. Before the 2011 auction, franchises were allowed to retain up to four players from their old squads, but for every player retained, the franchise would lose a certain amount from the salary cap of INR 560.51 ($9)million available for spending at the auction. For the first player retained, INR 112.1 ($1.8) million was deducted from the salary cap, for the second player it was INR 80.96 ($1.3) million, the third INR 56,050,531.91 ($900,000) and the fourth INR 31,139,184.4 ($500,000.). However, these were not necessarily the amounts paid by the franchise to the retained players. So a team that kept four players went into the auction with only INR 280.25 ($4.5) million to spend.

"There were some franchises that did not retain any players, but still ended up paying more money [for four players in the auction] than a franchise that retained four players and paid just half the salary cap," a franchise official said. "In fact these teams [which retained players] obviously paid more money although that was never made public. So that was a perfect way for teams to go to an auction with half the purse and also circumvent the salary cap."

Not all franchises were in agreement about the right to match card, though. "It works for teams where players are asking for a big price [to be retained]," an official who did not agree with the concept said. He felt it was unfair that a franchise, which had not participated in the bidding for a player, could walk away with that player only because of a right to match card, when there were other teams actively involved in the bidding. "If two franchises are locked in a bid to buy a player and then suddenly a third franchise comes and says he has the right to buy the player, you might end up paying more [in order to discourage teams from using the card]."

The salary cap for the 2014 auction is likely to be Rs 600 million (approximately INR 622.78 ($10) million) and is likely to increase by 10% each year. For the first time, the purse in is Indian Rupees and not dollars. If a franchise chooses to retain five players, it is likely to lose Rs 125 million from the purse for the first player, Rs 95 million for the second, Rs 75 million for the third, Rs 55* million for the fourth and Rs 40 million for the fifth - a total of Rs 390 million, leaving them with Rs 210 million for bidding during the auction.

It is not clear at the moment whether there is a restriction on the number of Indian or foreign players that can be retained. "There is nothing definitive," a BCCI official said. "All five can be Indians or all five can be overseas. Or there could be a mix of both."

According to the official, a higher purse was unhelpful for the smaller teams, as they had lesser money to spend compared to sides like Mumbai Indians or Chennai Super Kings. With the 2014 purse likely to be capped at Rs 600 million, the playing field will be more level because that was the average expenditure of the smaller teams in terms of player payments and operation costs. The salary cap had been INR 778.48 ($12.5)million (approximately Rs 750 million at current exchange rates) in 2013.

The contracts for players retained or signed at the 2014 auction are likely to be valid for three seasons, with the franchise holding the right to renewal at the start of each of season. The number of players in a squad is also likely to be reduced from 33 to 27, and the number of foreign players cut from 11 to nine per team. Another important change is that all Indian domestic players, who have either played first-class or List A cricket, will be eligible for sale at the auction. Previously only players who had played for India or played a certain number of games for their IPL teams could be auctioned.

All these suggestions and recommendations will now be discussed by the IPL governing council, which has to ratify the changes for them to take effect. The Singapore meeting was the first gathering of IPL officials and franchises since the betting and spot-fixing scandal marred the 2013 season. Ravi Sawani, the head of BCCIs anti-corruption unit, addressed the franchises and gave a presentation on the various corruption-related events in the past two IPLs. Sawani also spoke of the various measures his team would put in place to protect the integrity of both the players and the tournament.
